When the Deck Wasn’t Just a Deck: The Harassment That Followed

A Walk That Changed Everything
In November 2022, my husband and I were taking a peaceful walk through our neighborhood when we passed a home undergoing major construction.
We noticed:
A deck being built
A fence being installed
Trees being cut down
A retaining wall in progress
I asked the homeowner if the HOA president had said anything about all the work being done.
Her response was, “No, I’m on the board.”
Now, to my knowledge, she didn’t hold a direct position, but clearly she was connected, possibly one of the board’s cronies. And that’s when I saw it: There were two sets of rules in our neighborhood.
When I Built My Deck, It Was a Problem
Not long after that, I had my own deck built — and the tone shifted fast.
Suddenly, I was:
Asked for permits
Hit with compliance letters
Threatened with fines
It was clear — my project was being targeted, even though it was less invasive than hers.
I Pulled the Records — And the Hypocrisy Was Clear
I requested permit records from the city. What I found?
The neighbor with all the construction — deck, fence, trees, retaining wall — had no permits on file.
But she faced no threats. No fines. No scrutiny. Because she was aligned with the board.
The Real Message
This wasn’t about rules. It was about power. The HOA was weaponizing covenants, selectively enforcing policies, and punishing anyone who didn’t fall in line — or worse, dared to ask questions.
That’s what Home Sweet Headache is here to expose.
I Refused to Stay Silent
Instead of backing down, I did what too many are afraid to do — I documented everything.
And I started speaking up.
This blog is a protest, a resource, and a platform for homeowners who are tired of being bullied by the very people who are supposed to serve the community — not control it.
Have you experienced selective enforcement by your HOA? You’re not alone. Let’s shine a light on these stories — and turn our frustration into change.
